Costco Recalls Eggs Due to Potential Salmonella Risk

Costco has issued a recall for its Kirkland Signature brand Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs due to potential salmonella contamination. This recall affects thousands of eggs distributed to 25 Costco stores across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, starting from November 22. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that around 10,800 plastic cartons of these eggs are being recalled by Handsome Brook Farms. The recall was prompted after it was discovered that eggs not meant for retail were mistakenly packaged for retail sale.

To prevent such incidents from happening again, the company is implementing additional supply chain controls and retraining measures. The affected egg cartons can be identified by the UPC code 9661910680, Julian code 327, and a “Use By Date” of January 6, 2025, printed on the side.

Consumers are advised not to consume these eggs and to return them to their local Costco for a full refund or dispose of them. So far, there have been no reported illnesses related to these eggs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illness, hospitalizations, and deaths in the U.S. The bacteria can cause severe and potentially fatal infections, especially in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
